Project Summary:

Located at: Valdora, Queensland

Capacity: 15 MW

Commissioned: 2017

Owned and Operated by: Sunshine Council QLD

Locality Planning & Consulting gained the planning approcval  for the solar farm that enabled Sunshine Coast Council to become Australia’s first local government to offset its entire electricity consumption from green energy is powering ahead with the creation of a 15-megawatt solar farm on 50 hectares behind Coolum, forecast to save $22 million in electricity costs over 30 years. It will provide green power on the Sunshine Coast by mid-2017 and will slash the cost of buying electricity for everything including streets lights, sports facilities, buildings, galleries, parks and libraries. With the facility expected to generate more electricity than is needed, excess electricity can be sold, creating further cost savings.

Perceived as a game-changing project, this initiative will provide real benefits for the council, the ratepayers and the clean technologies sector, positioning the Sunshine Coast as a leader in the renewable energy field and delivering positive economic and environmental outcomes. The council is striving to make the Sunshine Coast Australia’s most sustainable region, and the solar farm at Valdora is part of the master plan to achieve that vision. Covering 24ha of the 49ha site, this will be the biggest solar farm in Queensland and the fifth largest in the nation.

With 100% of the region’s energy needs coming from renewables by 2017, it’s a win for both the environment and the community, contributing to the creation of a region which is economically, environmentally and socially sustainable.
